I am deeply troubled by the passing of the new anti-LGBTQ bill in Uganda, which poses a grave threat to the human rights and safety of LGBTQ individuals in the country. It is unacceptable to subject people to criminalization, discrimination, and violence based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The use of the death penalty is a particularly egregious violation of human rights and an extreme form of punishment that has no place in any civilized society. This is a clear violation of international human rights standards and is contrary to the principles of equality and non-discrimination.

I call on the government of Uganda to immediately repeal this law and uphold the rights of all individuals regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. I also urge the international community to speak out against this law and support the efforts of local activists and organizations who are fighting for the rights of LGBTQ people in Uganda. International court should issue another warrant of arrest for such a set back in 2023’s history.

We must stand together in solidarity with LGBTQ communities around the world to ensure that they are protected from discrimination and violence, and that their human rights are respected and upheld.
